Moses and the Exodus (Passover)

Exodus 1-14

This week our children are learning about Moses and the rescue of God’s people in the Exodus. This is one of the most important stories and events recorded in Scripture. It is the event that the people of God look back to remember what God had done and what it reveals about him. This is what Passover was for. Every year, going all the way back to the events of the Exodus, the people of Israel would remember and relive the events of their rescue from Egypt. The meal was a reenactment of plagues that God used against Egypt and the preparations the people made before they left. The liturgy of the meal does not talk about what God did for them back then, but refers to what God did for us. It is done as if those partaking of the meal in the present were there in the past. It is a living event that continues to affect those who celebrate it throughout history. Even now, for us who are in Christ, we look to the Exodus to understand what Christ accomplished in his sacrifice as our Passover lamb. We are reminded that God is our redeemer and he is faithful to all of his promises giving us hope. Below are some questions and themes to help you with your bible discussions this week.

  • What happened to the Children of Israel after the time of Joseph? They were made into slaves by the new pharaoh. They were forced to work very hard and treated very badly. They cried out for help and God heard them and set out to rescue his people and fulfill his promise to Abraham.
  • How did God talk to Moses? He spoke through a burning bush. He told Moses he was standing on holy ground and told him to take off his shoes to show reverence.
  • Did Moses believe he could go and talk to pharaoh alone? No. Moses was not confident in his abilities. But God reassured him that the One who was calling him would be with him and would help him rescue the children of Israel.
  • Why did God send the plagues? They were a sign that the God of Israel was more powerful than anyone or anything in Egypt. The Lord was the one in charge and Pharaoh would have to listen and obey whether he wanted to or not.
