Acts 24:1-28:30
Paul goes to Rome
The Book of Acts comes to its climax at the very end. It is an odd way for the book to end, really. We have spent all of this time hearing how the first followers of Jesus and the establishment of the church. We begin with the emphasis on the Apostles who were with Jesus for his earthly ministry but have the narrative shift to Paul, the former persecutor of the church, and his ministry. Now at the very end we see Paul enduring the same persecution he inflicted before his conversion, but instead of being stopped by this trial and instead uses it to further the gospel. Paul is not stumped by his extended trial before the governors and magistrates. He is not discouraged or distressed. Instead he finds courage and confidence in the work accomplished in him and through him by Christ to continue spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. Below are questions and themes to help you with your bible discussions this week.
- How does Paul’s journey to Rome begin? Is he planning his trip or is God preparing a way for him to get to Rome? Paul’s goal throughout his ministry was to get to Rome. But when we come to the end of Acts it is not Paul who is orchestrating his way to Rome but God through trial is sending him to his ultimate goal.
- Does Paul seem frightened to testify in front of the most powerful men on his time? Not at all. With each step along his journey, Paul answers the questions with confidence and without hesitation. He even uses his right as a Roman citizen to request an audience with the Emperor.
- Does Paul reach Rome in the end? Yes. He makes it to Rome, but it doesn’t seem like the story ends. We are just told that Paul continues to share the gospel with courage and boldness. There isn’t a real end to the book. It is a reminder to us that the work of the church continues with you and me.
Paul knew what to tell people about God because the Holy Spirit helped him.
