The Faithful Bread Of Life

The Faithful Bread Of Life

Psalm 37:25 reads, “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.” This verse always makes me stop when I read this psalm. This psalm is written by King David, and is a rally call for the people of God to remain faithful to God. Although it may look like wicked people are prospering, God loves justice and will reward your faithfulness. Then in 37:25, we read that King David has never seen the righteous forsaken or his people begging for bread. My mind jumps to the story of King David that is recorded in 1-2 Samuel, and I distinctly remember David being hungry and asking for the holy show bread that was devoted to the Lord. David has been shunned by King Saul and was loving on the run. He had to beg for bread.

How does this add up? How can King David say that God’s people have never begged for bread, when he himself has begged for bread. David was certainly not the only one! The answer to this question is found in the previous two verses, which tell us, “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.” The key to the health, safety and prosperity of God’s people is not founded on their faithfulness, but upon God’s faithfulness. In this world, hard times will come. Throughout history God’s people have been poor and destitute, begging for bread. But that is just food! In Christ, they are always being fed the Bread of Life. You do not have to beg for Him, because He gives Himself freely and fully to you.

This week, our Heritage children will learn about faithfulness. They will he taught the importance of trusting God in all things and living for Him always. As parents and teachers, our goal is to point them to the Bread of Life, all while praying they taste of it and see that God is greater than all this world has to offer. Talk to your children about the great goodness of God, and how He is all we ever need. I pray you all have a blessed week.
