God’s Faithfulness To The Imperfect

God's Faithfulness To The Imperfect

Jacob

Genesis 27-28

This week our children are learning the story of Jacob. Jacob’s story is a continuation of the story God began with Abraham. Jacob’s life continues the witness of God’s faithfulness to his chosen family and to the promises he has made to bless the world through them. It should be said though that it is not a story about Jacob’s faithfulness or righteousness. On the contrary, Jacob is more devious than Abraham or Isaac. He fools his blind father, cheats his own brother out of his birthright, he schemes against his uncle, and even wrestles with God. But through all of Jacob’s conniving ways, God works toward blessing his people and the world. Below are some questions and themes to help with your discussions about the Bible lesson for this week.

  • Where did Jacob go to find a wife? He went to his Uncle Laban. He was not just looking for a wife though. He was also running from his brother who wanted to kill him for lying and cheating to get his birthright.
  • Was Jacob the kind of person we think of God using to fulfill his plans? No. Jacob did a lot of sneaky things to get his way. But he is the kind of person God likes to use: imperfect, just like the rest of us.
  • Who did Jacob marry? He married Leah and Rachel. He didn’t want to marry Leah, but God wanted to use Leah too in his plan to bless the whole world. It would be one of Leah’s sons who would be the great great great great … grandpa to Jesus.
