“… If You Love One Another.”

... If You Love One Another.

This week our children are learning about the last Passover Jesus celebrated with his disciples and his arrest in the garden after the supper.

Here are some questions and themes to consider and ask your children as you discuss this week’s lesson together.

  1. A highlight of the meal Jesus shared with his disciples was when he washed the feet of his disciples. This was a shocking action for a teacher and person with authority to take. This was the job of a slave. It was demeaning work and full of shame. But here is Jesus, kneeling before each man, and washing his feet. Why does Jesus tell his disciples he was doing this (John 13 and 14)?
  2. Jesus used the bread and the wine as symbols for his death. We still eat the bread and drink the wine (or juice depending on your tradition) and remember what Jesus’ death means for us and what it has done. What do we have because Jesus died for us?
  3. Jesus told his disciples that he was going away. But who was God going to send to be with his followers? How would this person make his followers feel?
  4. In the garden, before he was arrested, Jesus prayed to his heavenly Father. How was he feeling while he prayed? Why do you think he fet so sad and so scared?
  5. What did Peter do when the soldiers tried to arrest Jesus? Did Jesus like what he did? No. Jesus had taught his disciples to love and show kindness even to their enemies.

Major Theme: Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another the way he loves us.

Character Trait: Love

I put others before myself and do what I can to meet their needs.

Ask your child(ren) how they show love to others through helping them out.

Memory Verse:

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

John 13:35
