Fighting The Urge For More

Fighting The Urge For More

Contentment is a tricky thing in our times and culture. We are constantly being told that there is more for us and that we need more. Commercials sell us the idea we need a nicer car, for sale signs in yards remind us we need a larger house, and social media reminds us that everyone else appears to have a smoother and more put together life than we do. It is almost impossible to feel content with so many reminders of what we are missing out on. But, even if we feel content, we are sometimes made to feel like there is something wrong with us if we do have an overpowering urge for more.

But Scripture is faithful to remind us of what we do have and to ground us once more in the love of God.

The apostle Paul describes Christian contentment succinctly in Philippians 4:11b-12 where he writes, “. . .for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.” Consider what he is saying here. No matter what his circumstances, and as we know he endured some extreme difficulties, he felt ultimately secure and fulfilled. When he was beaten and left for dead, shipwrecked, imprisoned, on the run, etc., Paul did not lose his sense of God’s goodness and love for him. The secret he is talking about is the love of God.

As you move through your week, look for times that you begin to feel the urge for more, reflect on the words of Paul. Look for the constant of God’s love which never changes regardless of circumstance. Pray for his grace and his strength to find his love fulfilling.
