Triumphant Entry/Cleansing the Temple
Matthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-19; Luke 19:28-48; John 12:12-19
This week our lesson is on Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem and his cleansing the temple. Here are some questions to consider and ask your children as you discuss this week’s lesson together.
1. When the people cried out “Hosanna” they were singing the Psalm 18. It is a call for God to save them. What do you think the people wanted Jesus to save them from?
- Keep in mind that the Romans were in control at this time. The people thought Jesus was there to be their new king and would get rid of the Romans.
- But Jesus had really come to save the world from sin and death and would do it by dying on the cross.
2. What did Jesus ask his disciples to get for him to ride on into the city?
- When Jesus rides into the city on a donkey he is fulfilling a very old prophecy from Zechariah 9:9.
- God had promised way before Jesus came that he would send a king who would bring peace and would ride a donkey into the city.
3. What did Jesus do when he went into the temple?
- Jesus is angry in the temple because it is not being used for the reason God had intended.
- The temple was supposed to be used to worship and pray to God and it was for everyone to use.
- The religious leaders were using the temple to make money and it made it hard for poor people to come and pray and worship God.
